Dear Community,

Welcome to your UBports Newsletter as the festive season approaches for many of us. This will be the last newsletter for 2024 which is why it is a week later than usual. Though things tend to slow down a little towards the end of the year, there are still a few things to bring to your attention for next year.

One question about the funding of the Foundation and paid employees from the last Q&A caught our attention and like the Ubuntu Touch by UBports item from the last newsletter we want to be clear on. The UBports Foundation is a charitable foundation and has no paid employees. Our Board of Directors and Board of Trustees are all volunteers, there are no paid members.

We do pay Marius Gripsgard (who we are sure you all know) as originator and project lead of Ubuntu Touch for his undivided attention to the project. Also, we pay Ratchan Srirattanamet for their development work, and we have in the past paid for other developers work (mainly on 20.04 issues) but again the vast majority of work is all done by our wonderful volunteers.

Paying for work is not something we want to keep relying on in the future. We would much rather generate more Community involvement and development that way. That is after all what we are all about, Community and Community involvement, and why we are all here doing what we do.

We would also like to thank each one of you and our sponsors for your support and involvement, however large or small, with Ubuntu Touch and UBports during 2023. We are really looking forward to 2024 and what we have planned for the year ahead, and we very much want you to be a part of that.

With the new year just around the corner, why not mark the turning of the year with the move to Ubuntu Touch 20.04 Focal. Now is the best time to move if your device supports 20.04 Focal.

Xenial has reached the end of its life and 20.04 with OTA 3 is more than daily driver ready. Work on OTA 4 is ongoing and 24.04 will be here later in the New Year. So greet the start of the New Year with Ubuntu Touch 20.04 and move forward into the future of both Ubuntu Touch and UBports.

So thanks again, season's greetings and see you all in the New Year.

Device Page Makeover

The devices webpage will be getting a new makeover in the early part of next year. The aim is to make it clearer for users which device is the best one for them, be it a daily driver that you can rely on or something you can enjoy tinkering around with that still needs some developing. There will also be changes to what is expected from a porter(s)/maintainer(s) of an Ubuntu Touch device. We will be publishing a blog shortly with all the details and information before this all goes live in the first part of the new year.

Supporting Ubuntu Touch and UBports

There are many ways you can help and support UT and UBports.

One of these is in the UBports Shop, where you can buy yourself or someone else an Ubuntu Touch, UBports shaped gift.

Another is by making a donation. One at a time or on a more regular basis. No matter how large or small, please remember they are very much appreciated and that you are helping directly the development of UT!

You can also donate something else which is as equally valued by us, your time and enthusiasm. If you would like to get involved, please do. If you are not already on the Forum https://forums.ubports.com it is a great place to start. There are many other ways you can help your fellow UBports Community members, so please join in and lets us know how you want to help at socials@ubports.com.
